MSI-Fullerton Hat

2021

Designed as a special edition item for members of the Male Success Initiative-Fullerton (MSI-Fullerton) “Where Undergraduate Men of Color Achieve the Fullness of Their Potential”.

This design incorporates the story of resilience and adversity through the lens of Cal State Fullerton Track & Field and Cross-Country alumni Jayce Smith '15. Whose Korean heritage is woven into the side panel of the hat with the inscription "yong-gi" meaning courage; referencing Jayce's mantra and belief that "Courage is the basis of life." On the opposite side panel, you'll find his signature as an artist.

Paying homage to his Christian faith, the inside of the hat is lined with "TWO. THREE. FOUR." repeated on the seams. Referencing Psalms 23:4 "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The bill is a faux texture of elephant skin, resembling Tuffy the Titan, who serves as the mascot of Cal State Fullerton. The purpose of MSI-Fullerton is to address the underrepresentation of undergraduate men of color in higher education.
